The storage of bulk quantity of liquid gases, such as nitrogen, argon and oxygen, for industrial applications require the use of big cryogenic tanks. Despite of the need to be thermally insulated, these tanks are often installed in non sheltered areas and therefore maintaining the necessary vacuum insulation is a challenging tasks. In fact, due to the dimensions of the vessel water condensing on the inner wall and hydrogen outgassing from the outer wall are quite significant.
SAES Getters has developed a couple of alternative solutions to improve and maintain the required vacuum conditions over time. Traditional getter materials in the form of St 2002 Pieces are offered for all gases, but oxygen, while for oxygen service the new Lothar getters is proposed.
Alternatively, the tanks can be insulated with the SAES vacuum insulated panels, the saesINSULA. This innovative solution allows evacuating the chamber to a lower vacuum, 10-2 Torr, as opposed to the common 10-4 Torr.
